🔹 Definition (परिभाषा)

Subject–Verb Agreement का मतलब है —
👉 “Verb (क्रिया) का form हमेशा Subject (कर्ता) के number और person के अनुसार होना चाहिए।”

अर्थात् —
अगर Subject singular है, तो Verb भी singular होगी।
अगर Subject plural है, तो Verb भी plural होगी।

🔹 Basic Rule

Singular subject → Singular verb
Plural subject → Plural verb

👉 याद रखें:
He, She, It, Name (Ram, Sita, Boy) के साथ verb में -s / -es लगता है।
I, We, You, They के साथ verb का base form लगता है।

PersonVerb formExample

YouplayYou play cricket.
He/She/ItplaysHe plays cricket.

🔹 Important Rules (महत्वपूर्ण नियम)

🟩 Rule 1: Two Singular Subjects with “and” → Plural Verb

When two subjects are joined by and, use a plural verb.
Ram and Shyam are friends.
Ram and Shyam is friends.

Exception:
अगर दोनों शब्द एक ही व्यक्ति या विचार को दर्शा रहे हों, तो singular verb लगेगी।
Bread and butter is my favorite breakfast.

🟩 Rule 2: Subjects Joined by “or”, “nor”, “either…or”, “neither…nor”

Verb agrees with the nearest subject (second subject).

Either Ram or his friends are going.
Either the teachers or the principal is coming.

🟩 Rule 3: Collective Noun

A collective noun (team, family, committee, crowd) takes singular verb when it acts as one unit.

The team is winning the match.
लेकिन अगर group के members अलग-अलग काम कर रहे हों → plural verb।
The team are fighting among themselves.

🟩 Rule 4: Indefinite Pronouns (Everyone, Somebody, Each, Either, Neither, etc.)

ये singular माने जाते हैं → singular verb लगती है।

Everyone loves music.
Each student has a notebook.
Neither of them was present.

🟩 Rule 5: Words like “with, together with, as well as, along with”

Verb agrees with the first subject, not the phrase after it.

The teacher, along with the students, is in the class.
The teacher, along with the students, are in the class.

🟩 Rule 6: Nouns that are Plural in Form but Singular in Meaning

कुछ nouns दिखने में plural होते हैं, पर meaning में singular होते हैं — जैसे: news, mathematics, physics, economics, politics, measles, etc.

Mathematics is a difficult subject.
The news is shocking.

🟩 Rule 7: Plural Names / Titles / Books

Titles of books, movies, etc. though plural in form, take singular verb.

“The Arabian Nights” is a famous book.

🟩 Rule 8: Amount, Distance, Time, Money

When these represent one unit, use singular verb.

Ten kilometers is a long distance.
Five hundred rupees is enough.

🟩 Rule 9: “There is / There are”

Verb agrees with the real subject after it.

There is a book on the table.
There are many books on the table.

🟩 Rule 10: “One of” + Plural Noun → Singular Verb

One of my friends is a doctor.
One of my friends are a doctor.

🔹 Trick to Remember

🔸 If subject is singular → verb ends with ‘s’.
🔸 If subject is plural → verb without ‘s’.

👉 Example:

  • He plays → correct

  • They play → correct

  • He play → ❌

  • They plays → ❌
