“The Necklace” is a short story written by Guy de Maupassant. It tells us about a woman named Matilda Loisel, who was beautiful but always dissatisfied with her life. She wanted to live a luxurious life full of riches and jewels, though she belonged to a middle-class family.

One day, her husband received an invitation to a grand party. Matilda borrowed a diamond necklace from her rich friend Mme. Forestier to look beautiful at the party. Everyone admired her at the ball.

However, she lost the necklace while returning home. Instead of telling the truth, she and her husband bought a similar necklace by taking huge loans. They spent ten years repaying the debt, living a life of hardship.

Later, Matilda met Mme. Forestier again and told her the truth. Shockingly, Mme. Forestier revealed that her original necklace was fake and not made of real diamonds!
